About Deborah

As a media scholar, my research centers on cultures’ perception, representation and communication of science and scientists in various mediated texts. I am also an experienced public relations practitioner. Currently, I am a Visiting Lecturer in the Department of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to earning my doctorate at Pitt, I worked in public relations in the Washington, D.C. area for more than a decade.

Research

The core of my research serves to increase our understanding of how popular culture can make science more inclusive and welcoming to historically excluded populations, including women and people of color.

Teaching

I am an award-winning instructor passionate about teaching and invested in my students’ success. My goal is to give students a deeper and more practical understanding of the communication concepts they are learning in class with me.
